What makes a good book cover?
A good cover (or a "scroll-stopper”) is an image that stops you in your tracks for many reasons.
It compels you to ask a question. What’s inside? What does this mean? Why is that old man crying glitter?
Similar to writing, a cover should “show, don’t tell”. It hints at what the reader is looking for, without giving too much away. The most common problem authors face with their cover escapades, is thinking that the cover should show specific themes from the book. The author has already been completely immersed in the world of their book so the vision can become clouded. It’s important to remember what a cover’s job is: Grab the reader’s attention so they will actually read your book.
